Brushlink: Data Ecosystem to improve oral health and reduce insurance needs

Written by Roger Peverelli and Reggy de Feniks - Founders The DIA Community on Sep 28, 2022

Good brushing habits lead to reduced tooth decay, gum disease, and other costly health issues. Unfortunately, people do not automatically do this well, which costs patients, employers, and insurance companies more than $50 billion a year. They need tools to improve their oral healthcare.

This is what Brushlink sought to do with its technology, smart oral care solutions, and a custom data ecosystem for patients, dentists, and insurance companies. Brushlink’s solution combines data with technology to help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. It is set up in an easy-to-implement way, as it can be combined with any toothbrush and by using an app.

Its technology also helps reduce costs for dental practices, patients, and insurance companies. For example, dentists can connect with patients virtually via video conferencing and text messaging right in Brushlink’s app. This means patients can talk with their providers without taking time off from work. Insurance companies benefit because patients can prevent tooth decay and gum disease, which decreases insurance utilization.

Brushlink participated in an eighteen-month clinical study by DentaQuest, Cigna and United Healthcare in the USA, which found its technology superior and cost-effective. Moreover, Brushlink is integrated with Henry Shein’s Dentrix practice software management, used by more than 90,000 dentists. Its smart chip can also be used in any brand of toothbrush, manual or power. Its own brushes can also be white labeled.

How does it work?

The Brushlink is a device that attaches to any toothbrush, manual or electric, transforming it into a smart toothbrush. It monitors and tracks brushing behaviour and tracks this over time so that dentists can use the data.

The app gives real-time visual feedback, guiding the user over every tooth surface. It uses a score to motivate people to do better, which can even be linked to reward points. Leading to customizing rewards and extra revenue.

The activity tab tracks progress over time shows the number of brushing sessions and reminds people of flossing. The dentist app allows for telephone and email contact right from the app, showing the business hours and your next appointment.

Why did we select Brushlink to present at DIA Munich 2022?

Brushlink’s CEO, Nazar Kamangar, will present at DIA Munich 2022. She will highlight Brushlink’s innovative technology as well as feedback received from insurance companies, dentists, and distributors who have engaged with Brushlink to bring its technology and devices to their customers.

Some of the feedback includes how Brushlink’s technology breaks down brushing into sextant segmentation of the mouth to allow precise angulation calculations and collect clear trustworthy data. They appreciated how Brushlink created a low-cost device that can be attached to any manual toothbrush, which is still used by 266 million users in the United States as of 2019.

It is an easy-to-implement solution that is a cost-efficient way for insurers and consumers to improve brushing behaviour and improve oral health care. Consumers do not need to purchase Brushlink’s branded smart toothbrushes for adults and children to be able to benefit from its technology.

Who is Brushlink?

Based in Menlo Park, California, Brushlink, Inc. was incorporated in 2018 and is in the process of series A funding. Its Brushlink and Brushlink pro devices are available and Brushlink Junior will be available in Q4 2022.

Nazar Kamangar is an oral care entrepreneur who was born in Iran, and eventually settled in the U.S. In addition to her work as CEO of Brushlink, she co-created Smile Stations, a digital and mobile platform for dentists to communicate with patients.

“At Brushlink, we know that, for every $1 spent on prevention, at least $850 in restorative work can be prevented. Thus, our focus is to make smart, data-driven healthcare accessible, affordable, and even fun so we can help prevent tooth decay and avoid gum disease before they develop.”
