GROHE Sense solution: shift from water damage claims to active water security as a service

They developed GROHE Sense and GROHE Sense Guard, an App-controlled water security system for the residential segment to actively reduce the results of water damage. The combination of smart connected devices, intelligent device & cloud algorithms and the end user app create benefits for its users and allows GROHE to engage in new partnerships with insurers to jointly battle water damages.

GROHE Sense, the brand’s connected water security system, enables new and scalable business models for insurance companies, how to pro-actively reduce and eliminate water damage claims. 

Insurers’ biggest losses in the area of property insurance are water damage claims, totaling more than even fire and storm claims. Water damage itself is an underestimated risk. More than half of households in Europe have experienced water damage at least once. 93% of the cases could have been prevented.

One of the largest rollouts of GROHE Sense system has taken place in Finland in cooperation with LähiTapiola insurance company. GROHE and LähiTapiola started the roll-out of GROHE Sense and Sense Guard, GROHE’s intelligent water security system in thousands of Finnish homes. By 2026, about 100,000 homes in Finland will be protected from water damage thanks to GROHE Sense and Sense Guard.

  • Focus on prevention of water damages brings not only financial savings to home owners and insurance companies, but also has a broader environmental and social impact by reducing the amount of wasted water, and triggering the consumers to think about changing their habits by regularly observing their water consumption.
  • The core team consists of 15 employees bringing together cross-functional expertise and is based in Düsseldorf.

How it works
GROHE delivers an end-to-end solution to insurer that enable shift from water damage claims to active water damage prevention. With leaking pipes, washing machines and boilers as well as flooded cellars water can cause substantial damage to a home and generates ever increasing payouts by insurers.

In Finland, LähiTapiola refuses to accept this inconvenient truth by introducing GROHE’s proactive water security system to their policyholders. In a large-scale roll-out the partners install the GROHE Sense water security system in thousands of homes of selected customers.

Although water damage is the biggest risk to homes and causes more damage than fires or severe weather, only three per cent of all European households are equipped with a system for protection against water damage. The installation of GROHE Sense and Sense Guard will reduce the number of claims and the claim size for water damage and insurers.
