mitipi: making living safer by combining smart home technology and insurance
Zurich-based mitipi combines smart home technology and insurance for a safe and convenient life. Prevention, detection and insurance are the three elements one must care about when thinking about safety. On the market, there is no such a solution yet. The customers need to look for the elements on their own. That’s exactly where mitipi comes in: digitalization and technology make it possible to offer everything in one subscription.
mitipi created together with their insurance partner Smile an extensive home insurance. For the customer this means convenient access to extensive safety and better protection for a good price. The startup won bronze in THE EFMA−ACCENTURE INNOVATION IN INSURANCE AWARDS 2019 – Category “connected insurance and ecosystems”.
Kevin ‘the virtual roommate’
In the US and in Europe, 1 in 2 people will experience a burglary during their lifetime. mitipi wants to change that and prevent the break-in before it happens. This is why they developed “Kevin”. Kevin is designed to serve as a kind of “virtual roommate” because it’s programmable to emit light and ambient sounds. Kevin is the first IoT device to simulate the presence of people in a room by emitting light, shadow effects, and sound, meaning burglars will think someone’s home, and won’t want to break in for fear of being caught. Kevin uses an extensive database of household activities that they have recorded with real people in their real homes. The algorithm creates a realistic daily routine. It’s an easy and comparably cheap device. Kevin can be combined with a detection element, like a sensor.
On the technical side, Kevin is pretty straightforward: It’s a lamp inside an integrated speaker. The device is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi; users can program Kevin’s functions using an accompanying app, which allows for multiple users, automatic activation, and remote monitoring.
Kevin has already gotten a lot of attention: in the beginning of 2018, 500 units were sold in a crowdfunding. Kevin is also available on Amazon and different Swiss retailers.
Extensive home insurance
In collaboration with Smile, mitipi has developed a unique insurance product. Clients shouldn’t have to deal with their policies, and still know that they’re well protected. Clients get simple and good products with terms that are easily understandable. That fits perfectly well together with Kevin. They start with the home insurance, but private liability as well as a deductible insurance will follow.
The safety subscription, which will at first cover prevention (Kevin) and insurance (home insurance), will launch on the market in Switzerland in March. Customers who subscribe to safety with mitipi, can benefit from an anti-burglary guarantee. If a burglary happens, they will get their money back for one year. The distribution of the package is completely online.
Why we selected mitipi for DIA Amsterdam
mitipi increases home safety while improving customer engagement by combining smart home technology & insurance. At the moment customers need to check for the three fields (prevention, detection, insurance) what is on the market, which smart home devices are compatible and what is included in the insurance. mitipi takes that away by offering all the three parts in one bundle. Offering customers, a safer and easier way to handle insurance and greater coverage on top.
At DIA Amsterdam Julian Stylianou, CEO and Co-Founder mitipi and Pierangelo Campopiano, CEO Smile will present the safety subscription including Kevin.
