Squarelife: creative and transparent insurance

Written by Roger Peverelli and Reggy de Feniks - Founders The DIA Community on Sep 17, 2018

SquarelifeAG is an insurance company registered under the Financial Market Authority of Liechtenstein (FMA). The startup invents, develops, produces, distributes and sells insurance products and solutions. Squarelife sells directly or through partnerships. Their services are based on’s tech platform and leverages the quality and the technological roadmap of the core platform that serves millions of policies worldwide. On top of their own capital, they protect their customers with the support of RGA, Reinsurance Group of America, Incorporated.

Squarelife develops insurance solutions for its European partners that stand out for innovation, flexibility and convenience. They are the only company in Europe fully owning what they consider the 3 key elements of an insurtech success:

  • a full insurer license, they are NOT a broker
  • the full tech stack, fully digital, AI ready.
  • a team with 20 years of experience in the field.

Their operating model is not about cutting costs but optimizing resources. They developed a unique tech stack that adapt via few lines of programming (code) to different businesses and produce viable products in literally hours. The combined result is a way cheaper and more valuable product for the end user, through the strong internal tech development.

Squarelife is already serving tens of thousands of customers across their different product lines, in all of Europe, through direct online pure digital selling, traditional and nontraditional, and standard distribution networks. They are present in 17 European countries and with more than 130,000 customers and over 800,000 policies managed by the same technological engine. The tech platform Lifeware is serving almost 1M users and more than 10 billion in assets under management.

How it works
Square2GO is an insurance policy that can be activated via smartphone in just a few minutes, with a daily duration: compared to a premium of a few euros, the customer will be covered for contingencies that may occur in those 24 hours. The subscription is very fast and remotely, with smartphones, through a questionnaire of a few minutes. No piles of documents to sign, no interviews with the agents, no medical check-ups. And no waste: the policy is activated only when needed, neither before, nor after. Speed is not the only advantage for the customer: by not counting any physical sales network, the company does not have to have a return on these expenses.

Collaboration between Squarelife and Getsurance
Together with Reinsurance Group of America (RGA), the Berlin-based insurtech Startup, Getsurance, has developed a long-term disability product that protects customers from the loss of their income due to illness or accident. The product features an algorithmic underwriting process – based on just a few health questions and Getsurance said customers are instantly granted coverage. It means for the first-time customers can take out disability insurance instantly & paperless.

Why we selected Squarelife for DIA Munich
At DIA Munich Dr. Elias Vicari COO from Squarelife will present an example of collaboration with German insurtech venture, Getsurance. They jointly built a compelling product perfectly fitting the digital only strategy of their distribution partner, creating a completely seamless experience for the customer while being strictly compliant with commercial and legal framework.

The innovation is both in the underwriting process, not just lean and clear but also adaptable to the real behavior of the customer on the partner’s website. They created a set of APIs that adapt, in a dynamic way, to what people want to do online during the underwriting process.

Who is Squarelife?
The Swiss company Squarelife, an evolution of Lifewar, was founded in 1998. Now the Squarelife team is made up of about 50 people, mostly informatics, divided between the various company offices, including Lugano, Zurich, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Milan and India.

All employees have graduates, and half of them have a doctorate. This allows them to take care of the technological aspects that traditional insurance companies cannot manage.

“Squarelife’s ambition is to combine the freshness and speed of a start-up to the stability and governance of a fully-fledged life insurance.”

Elias Vicari, COO Squarelife
