TrueMotion: Making money by driving safer – thanks to Mojo

Written by Roger Peverelli and Reggy de Feniks - Founders The DIA Community on Apr 19, 2017

Headquartered in Boston, Mass., TrueMotion the leading provider of turnkey, smartphone usage-based insurance (UBI) technology, combines the power of mobile technology, machine learning and data science to combat the rising rate of car accidents and fatalities. Its patented technology accurately identifies drivers and scores their actual driving behavior, which reduces instances of distracted driving and other risky behaviors for up to 75 percent of users.

TrueMotion uses big data and software to make driving safer and more affordable. The company developed an app that measures driver’s habits using sensors in their cell phones. The benefit is two-fold. Insurers can more accurately determine insurance rates based on actual driving behaviors instead of proxies. And safer drivers means less money paid out. Drivers are able to become safer while earning rewards and significant discounts on their premiums.

TrueMotion delivers its Software as a Service (SaaS) solution through leading insurers, like Progressive, American Family Insurance and other large insures, saving lives and making roads safer for users around the world.

Mojo: the newest app that rewards safe driving
Mojo is the newest app from TrueMotion. The app was launched in April 2017, which happens to be the Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Drivers who keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel instead of on a phone, could earn cash thanks to Mojo. The app automatically tracks trips and how much time the driver drives without distraction. The safer he drives, the more points he earns, which can be redeemed to win cash and prizes.

TrueMotion also offers TrueMotion Family, a free mobile app that makes it fun and easy for everyone in a family to track each other’s driving behavior and to stay connected while on the road.

The app engages the whole family to become safe and responsible drivers by tracking behaviors, scoring and ranking each driver and sharing the results with the whole family. In addition to showing driving behavior, TrueMotion Family also shares family members’ locations so you can see where everyone in your family is and how they got there.

Big data can lead to big savings
TrueMotion offers its solution to insurance companies seeking to reduce costs, develop new insurance products and/or improve their risk assessment capabilities. By distinguishing between safe and risky drivers, rewarding safe driver’s insurance companies can reduce claims costs, attract new customers and better retain existing customers. Because TrueMotion’s primary data source is a driver’s phone and not hardware installed in the car, implementation and administration costs for the insurer are cut by more than 50 percent compared to hardware-dependent Usage-Based Insurance (UBI) solutions.

How it works
After downloading and installing the app, Mojo runs automatically in the background and tracks each trip. Based on frequency of distraction, (which Mojo defines as Swiping and Typing; Handheld Calls; and Hands-free Calls), the user gets an overall Mojo score. The score adjusts up or down after each trip based on how much or how little the driver was distracted by his phone. Each minute driven without distraction counts as a point. When the driver has earned 300 points, he gets to spin the prize wheel, where he has a chance to win a $5 Amazon gift card. If winning prizes isn’t quite enough to maximize the score, TrueMotion has built “nudges” into the app to help the driver kick any bad habits he might have developed over the years. These helpful reminders tell him exactly how to keep improving and eventually put down the phone whilst driving, for good.

The big TrueMotion UBI data platform provides clean, comprehensive driving records, driver scores and analytics; and a management and analytics dashboard that allows an insurance company UBI team and customer service representatives to deploy, manage and track a UBI program.

Why we selected TrueMotion for DIA Amsterdam
TrueMotion is a 2016 DIAmond Award Winner. We selected the company again for the DIA Amsterdam edition because, again, they are offering something completely new. By partnering with TrueMotion, insurers can offer customers advanced, innovative insurance solutions designed to improve driving habits and reward safe drivers with discounts on their premiums.

Who are TrueMotion?
TrueMotion (formerly known as Censio) founders Brad Cordova and Joe Adelmann wondered if, and how, they could provide both drivers and insurance companies greater visibility into driving habits without the hassle of installing a device. Cordova, Adelmann and the other co-founders Jon McNeill and Scott Griffith recognized that the increased presence of smartphones, which go where drivers go, would provide a way to see not only what the car was doing, but also what the driver was doing. Now they are on a mission to end distracted driving. The company raised $ 10 million in funding led by General Catalyst Partners and including Bain Capital Ventures and Lakestar. In 2017 Brad Cordova has been named to be the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. The list, is “the most definitive gathering of today’s leading young changemakers and innovators in the U.S.,” according to Forbes.

“Resisting the temptation to interact with our phone while behind the wheel is hard. According to surveys and our own research, many of us are fighting a losing battle and as a result distracted driving has spiked to alarming levels. Through extensive research and testing we’ve shown that it’s possible to lower distraction levels using the very technology that is causing the problem. Mojo, which was developed based on our research and testing, is designed to make it easy, fun and rewarding to stop picking up our phone when we’re behind the wheel.” Scott Griffith, co-founder and CEO of TrueMotion.
