How LAQO addresses driver safety and sustainability while driving growth powered by CMT

In 2019, during a coffee break at DIA Munich, Marijan Mumdziev, Managing Director Europe at Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), and Ana Zovko, Managing Director at LAQO Insurance, met each other. Their joint mission was to encourage responsible driving behaviour, maintain good drivers, and ultimately prevent accidents on the roads: this is how LaqoPrevent started.

Powered by CMT and with digital and data analytics at its core, LAQO built LaqoPrevent, the first service ecosystem that rewards drivers for driving safely and reducing their carbon footprint. We sat down with Marijan Mumdziev and Ana Zovko to talk about how LAQO addresses safety and sustainability while driving growth together with CMT.

When it comes to technology, what does CMT offer that allows for business transformation?

Marijan: “There are three key domains in which we’re supported business transformation. The first one is the domain of customer experience, where technology drives customer loyalty. The second domain is about processes and services, where we help develop new products and services to create new and additional revenue streams. Lastly, it’s about process automation, which drives down the costs.”

Ana, can you explain how LAQO managed to leverage CMT’s technology to build one of the most innovative digital insurance initiatives in Europe?

Ana: “Together with CMT, we implemented the LaqoPrevent program, which is based on telematics. It’s positioned in LAQO’s mobile app, completely free for our clients. They just need to download the app and activate the program. While they drive, the program tracks their behaviour and makes customers aware of their driving behaviour. Based on their driving behaviour, customers will receive rewards. This program is not linked to risk assessment: we do not penalize bad drivers with higher premiums or reward good ones with higher premiums. But we send out a lot of different rewards. For example, if you do well, you will get a complete health checkup from us on a yearly basis. So basically the message is: you just keep driving safely and we will protect your health.

Not only safer roads are the main concern, but the rising global temperature is also on everyone’s mind. In a recent survey conducted by CMT, two topics stood out as people’s main concerns: rising fuel prices and rising temperatures. At LAQO, what we did within the LaqoPrevent program is enabling clients to track their carbon footprint. In the program, we’ve included a lot of information on what a carbon footprint is and how to reduce it. Of course, our customers receive nice rewards for when they reduce their carbon footprint. And we see that this program works: the engagement metrics are three times higher than average UBI programs.”

Marijan, how is crash detection being used as a service today?

Marijan: “At CMT, we developed a technology that pretty much automates the customer journey from beginning to end. When an accident happens, we can detect the crash in a car by using nothing more than a smartphone device. Last year, our partner Progressive Insurance announced that they had started using this technology and it had helped them improve their business. Let’s look at an example of an accident in which a Progressive customer was involved. Within two minutes of the accident, the data was collected on a smartphone, transferred, and sent to our back-end system. Then the data was processed, applying numerous different algorithms to identify false positives. Ultimately, based on this data, it was decided to distribute a push notification to all relevant stakeholders involved in the value chain for this particular service. Within three minutes of the accident, an automated call to the driver took place and, after four minutes, ambulance and road assistance were dispatched to the location. Last but not least, within ten minutes the claim was filed. This drives not only advocacy amongst insurance customers but also demonstrates how the processes can be optimized in a way to reduce cost and streamline the claim adjustment process, and many other activities throughout the whole journey. It is now a very mature technology, used by over 7 million drivers for over 5 years, and we are deploying it all over the world with more than a dozen different insurance companies. A great example of how we help insurers to drive business transformation.”
