ITHM: Supporting the insurer´s transformation from payor to true healthcare partner

To support the transformation of insurers from pure cost reimbursors to true healthcare companions, InsurTech Hub Munich organised its second edition of the H+ Digital Health Innovation Programme. InsurTech Hub Munich (ITHM) is a non-profit organization that fosters the advancement of digital innovation to create value for its community partners. With nine successful batches under its belt, they guide founders through a variety of programmes every year, create expert communities from their corporate networks, and connect start-ups and corporates during business development sessions. The overall goal of ITHM’s programmes: Identifying collaboration opportunities for start-ups and corporates and enabling projects together. 

With the final showcase on the 6th of April, the three-month journey of the H+ Digital Health Programme of 2022 has come to an end. Throughout the programme, InsurTech Hub Munich brought together its community of leading insurers, tech firms, cross-industry players and selected international health startups to present their digital solutions.

In the final showcase, (marvellous presenting by Esther Eva Prax, Estefania Rodriguez Migliarini and Christian Gnam by the way!), ITHM made a distinction between the patient’s perspective and the insurer’s perspective, since Insurtechs are able to make differences in both of their journeys. This made for a great showcase, showing ideas and solutions from different angles. International key-note speakers, insurers and insurtechs welcomed by InsurTech Hub Munich at the final showcase include:

Key-note speaker Bart de Witte (Founder, Hippo AI Foundation) and impulse speaker Francesca Tamma (Head of Behavioural Research, Swiss Re) kicked off the showcase with some great insights and different perspectives. Francesca opened her Behavioural Scientist’s Guide to Insurance for healthier people, while Bart de Witte discussed the next frontier in healthcare with a special emphasis on the democratization of data: balancing scarcity with abundance. With the Hippo AI foundation, Bart de Witte wants to open the barriers between different possibilities and preferences for a more ideal future with greater social benefits, making it all inclusive and more sustainable.

Gui Azevedo, co-founder of Brazilian insurer Alice, was an interview guest in the showcase, dialling in live from Sao Paolo. Alice, founded in Brazil in 2019, is a real healthcare partner. When founded, their vision was to create a value-based health care organization. It now merges the functions of being a primary health care provider with a direct consumer health insurance. Gui explained his approach to this value-based healthcare and how Alice gained the trust of over 10,000 customers in just 1.5 years(!).

Another highlight of the showcase were pitches of eight inspiring digital health care startups: 

Starting off with PeakProfiling: Builds algorithms for detecting diseases such as ADHD, depression, and several other indications analyzing characteristics of the voice.

Mobio Interactive: Has developed an AI-powered digital theragnostic platform that delivers clinically validated, personalized psychotherapy programmes, using digital biomarkers that quantify human brain states without relying on a wearable.

Mentalis: Offers an app-based solution for individual support to patients diagnosed with mental, behavioral, and/or neurodevelopmental disorders.

Medicalmotion: Is an AI-powered and CE-I-certified app that provides therapist-accredited exercise recommendations fully customized and based on users’ medical records.

Kinfinity: Offers a remote solution for physiotherapy powered by robot technologies using a smart bandage for treating acute injuries.

Healthcaters: Offers a preventive care solution that empowers employees to take control of their health.

Ecaria: Helps people to care for their relatives in the best way possible with digital tools, care advice, and smart learning.

Cardiokol: Is a digital telehealth company developing voice-based markers and methods for monitoring and preventing heart rhythm disorders in large at-risk populations.

The innovation programmes thrive thanks to the contributions of all partners, which is why during every batch ITHM honors their commitment with special awards. This time ARAG Krankenversicherung was crowned H+ “Expertise champion” for the strong commitment, excellent expertise and great contribution and Munich RE as „Most Engaged Partner” for constant support throughout the program.

The showcase ended with an interesting panel discussion between Peter Stockhammer, Managing Director of Generali Vitality, Dr. Olivier Flückiger, Co-Founder and CMAO at RoX Health and Ludovic Pureur, Director International Partnerships, Europe & LATAM at Virgin Pulse.
